A Live, Televised Autopsy for the Huntington Gardens' Fascinating, Failed Corpse Flower & A Special Discount Offer For YOU
The Little Stinker That Couldn't
Last Tuesday, a friendly botanist unlocked the greenhouse to let us get a private sniff of the famous Corpse Flower, on display as the Huntington Gardens counted down the hours until this extraordinary plant opened its petals and put on a super smelly show. Even though the flower was still closed up tight, the odor was utterly disgusting. All the better to attract pollinating flies!
All week, we watched the Huntington's social media, waiting for the big reveal. But the Corpse Flower stayed furled like an umbrella in August. And today, it was announced that this year's Corpse Flower was DOA. It just didn't have enough stored energy to bloom, and was starting to spoil.
If you'd like to see what's inside a Corpse Flower, you can watch its biopsy here. If you want to know what it smelled like, see Richard's expression above.
