Great article and many thanks for the link to the New Times piece on John Walsh. I sure miss the New Times, they had a first rate small army of reporters, digging up the dirt and beating up the groggy L.A, Times, which I now refer to as the El Segundo Times. The shock came when the New Times owners cut a secret deal with the owner of the L.A. Weekly. They were competing in certain cities and they decided to do a monopoly trick and divide up the Country with only one of them left in each big City. It was one of the dumbest moves ever made by newspapers, and the Feds eventually caught on and fined them. L.A. was worse off without the New Times, and the Weekly faded away. Esotouric is filling the gap. Back in the 1970s the City's main corners were filled with newsracks, the L.A. Free Press, the Staff, the L.A. Star, the L.A. Sun, and many others, now all gone. Now corruption rules, unafraid in a land without local newspapers watching and screeching, like a thousand John Walsh clones.
