Esotouric visits Alhambra's famed Troll / Bridge House and shares a daffy discovery

Gentle reader,

Greetings from your friendly Los Angeles tour guides and historians, presently on a high from playing a part in helping to save Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood home from illegal demolition.

For our latest post that’s hidden from the rest of the internet, we want to take you inside an unusual Southland residence that got a lot of press when it was on the market earlier this year: the mysterious 1940s-era apartment that straddles the arch of a small bridge on the Alhambra / San Gabriel border.

Along with hundreds of looky-loos, retired teacher and Rosemead native Dwain Carlo Crum toured the tiny property, peeking into the odd angled bathroom, admiring the vintage tiles and steel windows, and gazing out over the concrete channel below.

What he saw got under his skin—almost as if he had been bewitched. He needed to possess the Troll / Bridge House!

In fact, Dwain was so anxious while bids were still being weighed that he commissioned a custom sign to hang on the porch—when he won. And win he did. After a frenzied bidding war, he emerged as the proud new steward of the weirdest house in the San Gabriel Valley.

In the seven-minute video at the top of this post, which is exclusively available to our supporting newsletter subscribers, you’ll explore the wee apartment under the bridge, see some of the unique details within, and be the first to hear a fascinating discovery that possibly places this structure in one of California’s coolest architectural categories!

The future of the Troll / Bridge House is still to be determined, and we’re eager to see how a landmark that flew under the radar for so many decades and that has now captivated the mass imagination will be activated. If you have ideas for what the property that Dwain calls Bridge House of L.A. could be, please share!

yours for Los Angeles,

Kim & Richard
