So much content in your notes. The tragedy is that the corruption of Huizar was clearly evident long before he left the LAUSD Board . Perhaps what LA should do is create a new office of special investigations to just focus on official corruption.
In a City were there are no controls, corruption flows downhill from the Council and perhaps the mayor's office. As one person commented , "I can not believe how much value you can receive from such a small "donation".
Thanks for reading. The city is probably not capable of investigating itself, but we’ve been thinking some sort of computer system to track and flag improprieties and odd patterns might be a useful tool. What we really need is a newspaper, of course! Meanwhile, Curren Price’s prosecution by the D.A.’s office is still playing out, with another court date this week. It will be interesting to see if the new D.A. ramps up investigations into City Hall.
Jeff Rabin of the LA Times did a series of stories regarding the extension of the Marina Del Rey ground leases back in the 1990's. The fix was in (lead by Marc Nathanson). Jeff did a tremendous amount of work checking the logic and the numbers and talked the Times into making it a front page story over several days.
That brought Richard Riordan into the discussion and between the Times, Jeff Rabin and Richard Riordan the taxpayers received a "deal" that probably improved the benefit to the taxpayers by several hundred million in net present value.
It also appeared to have lifted the cover on Nathanson's corruption both on the Small Craft Harbors commission and on the Coastal Commission where he was Willie Brown's appointee. He was rewarded with a free, multi year vacation in one of the State Prisons.
None of this would have happened without a strong local paper, dedicated reporter and Richard Riordan. Sadly all three are missing today.
extremely informative and valuable
I hope that awareness ab0u0t corruption grows. mom
